Types of Termites in North Carolina

Unfortunately, plenty of termite species appreciate our climate and happily call the Charlotte area “home.” The two most common types live beneath the soil—thus, their name: “subterranean.” They are the Eastern subterranean termite and the imported Formosan subterranean termite.

Eastern Subterranean Termites

Termites are social creatures that organize in colonies and are, at birth, created to take on a certain role. Workers in this species are white or cream colored and usually live less than one year. Their job is to feast on wood and keep other colony members fed.

Soldiers protect the colony with the worker caste providing them with food. This type of Eastern subterranean termite has a darker head, plus large jaws that help them to do their protective work. There are also reproductive termites, dark brown or black in hue. Queens rule over the colony with reproductive males playing a secondary role.

Formosan Subterranean Termites

This species organizes its colonies in a way that’s similar to their Eastern cousins and their workers can look similar. Their soldiers have an oblong-shaped head and they can be quite aggressive when it comes to defending their colonies. If you ever see a termite that looks like that and releases a white liquid, that’s likely a soldier from this species in a defensive act. The reproductive termites are a yellowish-brownish shade with small hairs thickly covering their wings.

Damage Done By Termites

Termites, like other creatures, need food to survive—and cellulose is their food source of choice. This is found in wood, which is why they often attack homes and other wooden structures. They also gnaw on wood panelling and flooring, cardboard boxes, and other places where cellulose can be found. Worker termites within a colony are eating 24/7/365, which is why the damage they create can become so significant, so quickly. In fact, in just one year’s time, termites can do $5 billion dollars in damage to homes and other buildings.

Signs of Termite Infestations and Damage

Brittle wood that may look fine from the outside but is actually weak inside, is a common sign of termite infestation and damage. Other signs include hollow sounds when you tap on wood or flooring that buckles, and mud tubes. If these mud tubes come back after being destroyed, this is almost certainly a sign of termite infestation. Termites shelter within these flat mud tubes and they can be found beneath your flooring, along cracks and around baseboards, pipes and more. Another sign of termites may be swarming behavior in the Spring, as they expand the number of their colonies. Or you may see shed wings in your home on window sills or flooring.

Although it may appear that termites can chew their way through concrete, they can’t. They can, however, slip through the tiniest of cracks, including those in poured concrete. In fact, they can get through a crack as small as 1/32 of an inch!

Reproduction Rates

In good conditions, a termite queen can live more than a decade; in optimal ones, anywhere from 15 to 25 years, much longer than the workers and soldiers. Plus, she can reproduce incredibly quickly, able to lay an egg every 15 seconds. Do the math. That’s exponential growth.

Because termites can be such crafty creatures—and because their colonies can grow so rapidly—it’s important to be proactive to protect your Charlotte home against an infestation.

“After an extremely thorough inspection, Fred offered an excellent plan of attack against the termites that were surrounding my home. We had active termites in some bait stations that another company was not checking and in the crawlspace. Fred combined a liquid treatment with Termidor and updated our termite bait stations to where I not only sleep at night, but I feel extremely confident with the protection Noosa has provided.”

According to the North Carolina Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services, subterranean termites are the most common in our state. Some are native and one—the Formosan subterranean termite— is an imported species, but regardless of the species, these soil-nesting pests can do a great deal of damage thanks to their sheer numbers.

As with almost all types of pests in our area, there are many steps homeowners can take to reduce pest populations. Preventative steps include:

  • Reducing or eliminating moisture: Termites must have water, sources of which can include leaking water pipes and faucets. Check your gutters and downspouts to make sure they direct water away from your house and don’t aim sprinklers right at your outside walls.
  • Inspecting your foundation regularly: Keep an eye out for uneven paint on surfaces and mud tubes (which subterranean termites use to move to wood from the soil), and check to see if any wood sounds hollowed out. Learn more on our blog post, “Three Signs You Have a Termite Problem.”
  • Checking exterior wood: Inspect all the wood on your home, such as door frames, window frames, and any boards around the foundation of your exterior walls.
  • Measuring the gap: You should keep an 18-inch gap between any wood on your home and the soil beneath it.
  • Moving firewood: It may not be as convenient as having it right outside your back door, but stacks of firewood are perfect homes for termites. Keep it at least 20 feet from your house.
  • Containing mulch: Mulch may look best piled right up to your foundation, but it makes a nice, moist spot for termites. Pull mulch back at least four inches from your house.
  • Turning out the lights: Outdoor lights attract termite swarmers in the spring.
  • Keeping the landscape neat: The foliage on shrubs, plants, and bushes should be a minimum of 12 inches away from your house’s exterior. You’ll be able to spot signs of termites easier and you’ll be providing better air flow, which helps damp soil dry out. Also clear away any piles of dead branches and stumps to make sure you deprive termites of the cellulose they need.
  • Choosing the right kind of wood: Pressure-treated lumber should be used for features such as fence posts or any wood elements that are in contact with the soil.

It’s easy to mistake termites for another type of pest, such as ants. The Environmental Protection Agency offers some good information on how to know if you have termites or ants, or you can check our blog post, “Flying Ants or Termite Swarmers” for answers.

There are some DIY termite treatments on the market, but you may soon forget about the few dollars you saved when you find that killing a few individual termites doesn’t affect the thousands that may be present in a hidden infestation. It’s also not a good idea to handle the chemicals that are powerful enough to get rid of termites.

Taking into consideration how much your home is worth (and that homeowner’s insurance does not cover termite damage), it’s critical to ensure that termites are brought under control as quickly as possible, and that takes an experienced termite control professional.

The termite technicians at Noosa Pest Management will know:

  • What species of termite you have
  • Where they are likely to hide
  • How to reach the areas where they hide
  • Which customized termite control plan will work best for your unique situation

We’ll also provide a free estimate and free initial inspection, then develop a strategy for the careful and thorough application of the right products in the right places.

Some state and municipal building codes in the U.S.—and some mortgage lenders—require that all new homes have some type of termite protection applied during the homes’ construction. Like any other type of termite control, however, the protection that the initial treatments provide don’t last forever. You can keep your new home from falling victim to a termite infestation by renewing your termite protection every 12 months. At Noosa Pest Management, we offer affordable termite service agreements that give you protection and peace of mind. To make sure your termite treatments remain effective year after year, contact us for a complimentary termite inspection and free estimate.

Termites are active around the clock, every day of the year. Even if they haven’t found your house yet, subterranean termites may be moving underground from houses and other structures around you. Regular termite control service includes inspections by experienced termite pest control professionals who can recognize the signs of termite activity and create a comprehensive plan to ensure your home doesn’t get infested.

In North Carolina, humidity can be quite high, especially during the warmer months. If, for example, this humidity gets into your home’s crawl space, condensation can occur, creating an ideal environment for termite activity, as well as for mold and other fungal growth, and the presence of additional kinds of pests. So, when we perform humidity analyses and moisture readings of your Charlotte home, we’re looking for information that can help us to understand your home’s environment and allow us to make targeted recommendations for your termite treatment plan.

Certain types of termites (known as swarmers or alates) have the ability to swarm and they’ll undergo this activity if their current colony is getting too crowded, usually at a certain time of year that can differ by species. Often, the second nest will be created in a new house although, in some cases, the termite swarmers will settle in a different place of the same one. If you see these flying termites outside of your home, they may be settling there for their new colony. After they’ve chosen their new nest, they often shed their wings, no longer needing them. If you see signs of shed wings in your home, this indicates a new colony there.

Swarmers are looking to accomplish two goals: to find just the right habitat for their new colony and to mate with swarmers of the opposite gender. They’re looking for moist soil and the presence of wood because that makes an ideal environment for their reproductive activities and ongoing colony growth. The colony that they left behind, whether in the same house or another location, will continue to thrive, as well, unless appropriate termite treatments are applied. In other words, this isn’t a relocation of an established colony. It’s the creation of a new one when the mature one has gotten too large.
