Termite Species in Cornelius
Cornelius is home to many types of termites. The primary types are both subterranean: Formosan subterranean termites and Eastern subterranean termites.
Formosan Subterranean Termites
Formosan subterranean termites are the most aggressive termite species and eat wood faster than all others, causing a lot of structural damage. They can construct subterranean and above-ground nests, making them an even greater threat. These secondary nests are called carton nests and provide moisture.
Their workers are large and white or off-white. Their soldiers have teardrop-shaped heads and are orange-yellow. Winged Formosan termites are tan or brown, and their wings are covered in small hairs.
Formosan subterranean termite queens have a faster reproduction rate than all other species, resulting in larger colonies. In the most extreme situations, their nests can be over 300 feet and can even weigh over 600 pounds—housing millions of termites.
Eastern Subterranean Termites
Eastern subterranean termites are the most common type in America. They create networks of underground tunnels for their colonies.
Eastern subterranean termite workers are smaller than Formosan subterranean termite workers. Their soldiers have rectangular heads and long mandibles, and they are gray-brown in color. Winged Eastern subterranean termites are dark brown or black.
Termite Reproduction and Colony Growth
Termite queens can produce an egg every 15 seconds, and because of this, termite colonies grow very quickly. Queens can also survive for a long time, up to 25 years.
After enough growth in one termite colony, winged termites called swarmers fly out to find a spot to create an additional colony. They’re attracted to spots with wood and moist soil. More colonies means even larger infestations and even more damage.
Problems Termites Cause
Termites’ wood consumption can warp and weaken wood in numerous parts of the home. This can cause thousands of dollars of damage to your home’s wood flooring, paneling, ceilings, doors and door frames, window frames, and support beams.
Additionally, termite damage and activity are not covered by homeowner’s insurance. This makes them especially dangerous and costly for homeowners.
Signs of a Termite Infestation
There are a number of signs of a potential termite infestation for Cornelius, NC, homeowners. Tiny shed wings are a sign of a new termite colony and typically appear on window sills or floors.
Flat mud tubes around your home’s foundation, baseboards, pipes, and cracks are a potential sign of an infestation, as are mud tubes under your flooring. Mud tubes offer shelter to termites and are typically the width of a pencil. When these tubes are rebuilt after being destroyed, this is a very clear infestation sign.
Because termites damage wood internally first, damaged wood isn’t one of the first signs of infestation. Instead, look for wood that appears undamaged but feels softer or brittle. There also may be a thin brown-gray film covering it. Tap on wood and listen for a hollow sound.
In the springtime, watch for groups of winged termites. This is swarming behavior, a major sign of an infestation.
Preventing Termite Infestations
To prevent termite infestations, we have a few recommendations for Cornelius homeowners:
- Trim bushes, shrubs, and other plants at least a foot away from the walls of their homes. This includes dead tree stumps and branches. This improves airflow, drying out damp soil to make it less hospitable for termites.
- Stack firewood at least 20 feet away from the walls of the home. Termites find them to be optimal spots for colonies. Termites also love mulch, so it should be a minimum of four inches from the home’s foundation.
- Fix faucets and pipe leaks, along with broken downspouts and gutters. These can cause the soil around the home to become moist and attractive to termites. Sprinklers should also be turned away from the walls of the home.
- In the springtime, keep outdoor lights off whenever possible. These lights can attract swarming termites.
Along with these changes, homeowners should be as aware as possible when it comes to the exterior of their homes. This means checking their window frames, door frames, foundation, and any boards around the foundation for signs of infestations. Fence posts near the home should also be checked.
When a home is first constructed, termite protection is often applied. This is only temporarily effective, however. Noosa Pest Management can renew this protection annually, preventing termite infestations in a way that is both effective and affordable.
Our Cornelius Termite Control Strategies
Noosa’s termite control starts with a complimentary inspection from our termite control experts. This inspection will be very thorough and will involve analysis of the area’s moisture and humidity levels. High humidity leads to condensation, creating an attractive environment for termites.
This complimentary inspection will help our pest control professionals better understand which species of termite is infesting your home, along with their colony locations. With this information, our experts can then develop a personalized termite treatment strategy.
Our strategies can involve combinations of termite control options like bait stations and liquid treatments. Low-impact options may be available. These will be applied carefully in the proper locations.
Once the treatment plan has been devised, our experts will offer a complimentary treatment quote for our termite control services.
And termite control doesn’t end at the initial treatment. Because certain signs of termites may be obscured due to masonry and drywall, termite companies need to provide protection and inspect annually.
Noosa Pest Management provides annual inspections and protective treatments as part of our termite service agreement. During annual visits, our experts check for termite activity and anything that could attract termites.
