Roach Control

Charlotte, NC Roach Exterminator

Let’s face it. Roach control is a necessity if you want to maintain your health and sanity. These filthy creatures will penetrate the defenses of every structure, from suburban homes to close living spaces to commercial buildings. Cockroaches are interested in places to find food and places that are moist and dark—where they can hide and reproduce. That’s all.

There’s a lot about cockroaches that can alarm or disgust you. They can make you sick from all the germs that they carry, and when they reproduce, look out! With enough food and water, cockroach infestations can expand indefinitely. What’s more, if you see cockroaches regularly during the day, it means that these pests are being pushed out into the open from overpopulated hiding places. If this is the case in your home or office, it’s time to call an experienced pest control company for expert roach extermination!

Signs of a Charlotte Roach Infestation

At first, it’s hard to tell how many cockroaches live in your home, but as they reproduce, it gets easier. Look for noticeable signs, like the following:

  • Cockroach droppings: The feces of small roaches look like coffee grounds or black pepper, and larger roaches produce cylindrical droppings. The amount of visible feces might be the best indicator of an infestation’s extent and duration.
  • Foul odors: Some species give off unpleasant smells, and severe infestations might be accompanied by strong oily or musty smells. In addition, cockroach corpses found throughout the house can add to the stench.
  • Hidden egg cases: Oval-shaped egg cases, resembling purses, can sometimes be seen behind furniture and in other less visible locations, such as the spaces between books on bookshelves.
  • Shed Skins: Cockroaches go through several lifecycle stages before adulthood, and as they mature, they can molt 5–8 times. If you have a cockroach problem, you probably will see roach skins that have been shed along with other debris.

Perhaps the most obvious sign, as their numbers grow, is the presence of the cockroaches themselves. So, if you don’t call roach exterminators, cockroaches might infest your home!

Common North Carolina Cockroach Species

Different roach species have varying characteristics, so it helps to know how roach exterminators identify those often seen in homes and businesses in the Charlotte area.

  • American Cockroaches are among the most common pests infesting US homes. These reddish-brown insects are large and fast, creating a lot of inconvenience for homeowners. Not only do American cockroaches reproduce quickly, but they also live longer than most other roach species.
  • German Cockroaches are the world’s most common cockroach species. They often invade commercial establishments, such as restaurants, hotels, and nursing homes. Their color varies from light brown to almost black, they have half-inch bodies that allow them to fit into tight spaces, and they reproduce rapidly.
  • Oriental Cockroaches, also known as black beetles, have a darker coloration from brown to nearly all black. This roach loves moist locations, like sewers, sinks, drains, and leaf piles. These infestations can be tricky because the roaches lay their eggs in small places that are difficult to reach.
  • Brown-Banded Cockroaches differ from other roaches because they require less moisture to survive. You’ll find them in dry, warm locations, like under living room furniture. Identifiable by the two bands around the wings and abdomen, these cockroaches can be found throughout the US.

Cockroaches Can Spread Disease

Roaches have been known to spread E. coli, dysentery, cholera, leprosy, plague, typhoid fever, and other diseases. More often, they trigger allergies and asthma through their feces, saliva and shed body parts as they float through the indoor air. So, watch for these cockroach allergy symptoms:

  • Coughing
  • Nasal congestion
  • Skin rash
  • Wheezing
  • Ear infection
  • Sinus infection

If you or someone in your household has any of these symptoms, they may be allergic to cockroaches. So, see your doctor for treatment and to rule out other causes for the symptoms.
Roaches are a regrettable problem for everyone, some early 21st-century research showed that roughly 60% to 80% of the urban youth that suffer from asthma also test positive for cockroach allergens. However, investigators found that reducing allergen levels on bedroom floors, with help from professional cockroach exterminators, significantly diminishes the occurrence of asthma in the first year alone.

Preventing a Roach Infestation

Cockroaches need food, water, and shelter to survive. So, the more you can withhold these needs, the less appealing your home will be for them. Seal all food in tightly closed containers, wipe up crumbs and spills, wash dishes as needed, and put away pet food.

Put indoor trash out in covered outdoor containers as soon as possible, fix leaks to keep roaches from easy access to water, and get rid of clutter, such as stacks of old magazines or newspapers, to limit hiding places.

Also, do what you can to prevent more roaches from getting into your home. First, look for entry points, such as those around windows and doors. Then, caulk and patch the gaps around the pipes entering your home. Completing these tasks means that you’ll only need to deal with the ones that are already inside, along with their offspring.
